Korean Skincare: Tradition, Science & the Rise of K-Beauty

Korean skincare has travelled a remarkable distance. Ingredients once associated with traditional herbal practice—ginseng, rice, green tea and medicinal plants—now sit beside retinal, peptides, ceramides, niacinamide and biotechnology-derived ingredients in some of the world's most talked-about skincare formulations.

But K-beauty is more than a collection of unusual ingredients or a ten-step routine.

What makes Korean skincare interesting is the way tradition, formulation science, consumer culture and rapid innovation have evolved together.

Today, Korean skincare has become a global beauty category in its own right. So what actually makes Korean skincare different—and how much of its reputation is supported by science?

Korean skincare did not begin with “glass skin”

Long before sheet masks, essences and viral serums, Korea had a tradition of using botanical materials for skin and personal care.

One important influence is hanbang: traditional Korean herbal medicine and its modern cosmetic interpretation. Historical Korean medical texts, including the Donguibogam, describe numerous plants in connection with the skin.

Researchers examining the Donguibogam identified 52 medicinal herbs strongly associated with skin-related terminology; 46 of those plants had also been investigated in at least one modern skincare-related scientific study.[1]

This does not mean historical use proves that an ingredient works. Rather, traditional knowledge has provided Korean cosmetic researchers with a large library of biological materials worth investigating.

Ingredients that now appear in modern K-beauty include:

  • Ginseng
  • Rice and rice bran
  • Green tea
  • Licorice
  • Soybean
  • Mugwort
  • Fermented plant extracts

A good modern example is Beauty of Joseon, whose formulations deliberately combine hanbang-inspired ingredients such as rice and ginseng with contemporary cosmetic actives.

What research says

Traditional use and scientific evidence are not the same thing. However, published reviews show that several ingredients common in Korean cosmeceuticals—including ginseng, green tea, niacinamide and licorice—have biological or clinical evidence relevant to skin health. Research on Korean cosmeceuticals also shows an increasing effort to validate traditionally inspired ingredients scientifically.[1,2]

Tradition is being translated through formulation science

One of K-beauty's strengths is not simply which ingredients are used, but how they are incorporated into modern formulations.

Consider ginseng.

Ginseng has a long history in East Asian medicine, but modern cosmetic research examines specific ginsenosides and extracts for effects including antioxidant activity, inflammation, pigmentation and skin ageing. A 2024 review found substantial experimental research supporting the potential of ginseng and its by-products in skincare, while also noting the need for stronger clinical evidence.[3]

Rice provides another example. Rice-derived materials contain compounds including phenolics, proteins, oils and polysaccharides, and have been studied for moisturising, antioxidant, photoprotective and pigmentation-related properties.[4]

Modern K-beauty often takes a culturally familiar ingredient and asks a modern formulation question: how can we extract it, stabilise it, ferment it, combine it or deliver it more effectively?

That is quite different from assuming that “natural” automatically means effective.

What research says

A dermatology review investigating Korean cosmeceuticals found bioactive ingredients originating from plants, animals and biotechnology, with research exploring applications ranging from moisturisation and photoprotection to wound healing and skin rejuvenation. The authors also emphasised that evidence varies considerably between ingredients and that further clinical research is necessary.[2]

That distinction matters at K-Beauty Shop NZ: evidence for an ingredient should never automatically be presented as proof that every finished product containing it will produce the same clinical result.

Fermentation: an old process with a modern skincare role

Fermentation has deep roots in Korean food culture, so perhaps it is unsurprising that it also became prominent in Korean cosmetics.

From a scientific perspective, fermentation can alter raw plant materials through microbial enzymes and metabolism. Depending on the organism and substrate, it may change the molecular profile of the starting material, generate new metabolites or modify the availability of certain compounds.

But “fermented” does not automatically mean superior.

The effect depends on the raw material, microorganism, fermentation conditions, purification and final cosmetic formulation.

What research says

A peer-reviewed review of fermented cosmetic raw materials reported that fermentation can modify phytochemical composition and may enhance certain antioxidant, antimicrobial or skin-related properties. The authors also highlighted significant variation among fermented materials and the need for appropriate characterisation rather than treating fermentation itself as proof of efficacy.[5]

This is the type of science behind products such as the HaruHaru Wonder Black Rice range, where fermented black rice is incorporated into contemporary toners, essences and creams.

It is a good example of the K-beauty formula: traditional material + biotechnology + modern sensory formulation.

Why does K-beauty focus so much on the skin barrier?

Another characteristic of modern Korean skincare is an emphasis on hydration, soothing and maintaining a healthy-looking skin barrier.

Ingredients such as:

  • Centella asiatica
  • Panthenol
  • Ceramides
  • Hyaluronic acid
  • Beta-glucan
  • Ferments

frequently appear alongside stronger actives rather than being treated as completely separate categories.

Centella asiatica—often called cica—illustrates this particularly well.

In one human study, cosmetic formulations containing Centella extract improved skin hydration and reduced transepidermal water loss, although the study examined particular formulations and concentrations and should not be interpreted as proof for every cica product.[6]

Explore Korean skincare for sensitive and barrier-focused skin

A product such as SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Ampoule reflects this formulation philosophy: rather than building the product around aggressive resurfacing, the focus is on a centella-based, lightweight treatment.

What research says

Cosmetic use itself can measurably alter hydration, transepidermal water loss and other skin parameters. Research has also shown that skincare use may influence the facial skin microbiome, although the clinical meaning of these microbiome changes is still being investigated.[6,7]

The current trend toward “barrier care” therefore has a scientific basis—but claims about repairing or modifying the microbiome need to be judged product by product.

Korean skincare vs European skincare: what is actually different?

This comparison needs some nuance.

There is no scientifically defined category called “European skincare”, just as every Korean brand does not follow the same philosophy.

European skincare includes everything from French pharmacy dermocosmetics to German clinical brands and luxury houses. European cosmetic science is highly sophisticated, and products sold in the EU operate under a rigorous safety-assessment framework.

So K-beauty is not scientifically advanced while European skincare is old-fashioned. Both regions have sophisticated cosmetic R&D.

The differences are more often found in product culture and formulation style.

Korean skincare often emphasises

Layering and specialised textures. Toners, essences, ampoules, serum-mists, sleeping masks and lightweight sunscreens create many opportunities to customise a routine.

Prevention and maintenance. Hydration, daily sunscreen and barrier support often sit alongside treatment of pigmentation, acne or ageing.

Fast product iteration. Korea's highly competitive and digitally connected beauty market can move ingredients and formats from niche interest to mainstream adoption quickly.

Traditional ingredients reinterpreted through modern technology. Ginseng, rice and fermented extracts can appear alongside retinal, peptides or niacinamide in the same formulation.

European skincare often emphasises

Many European dermocosmetic brands have historically developed around pharmacy and dermatology positioning, frequently building focused ranges for acne, sensitive skin, eczema-prone skin, pigmentation and ageing.

There is also strong emphasis on ingredient safety, clinical testing and regulatory assessment within the European market.

The two approaches are increasingly influencing one another.

European brands now use essences, Asian-inspired textures and barrier language, while Korean brands increasingly incorporate dermatology-associated ingredients such as retinal, peptides, ceramides and advanced delivery systems.

The result is less “East versus West” and more global cross-pollination of cosmetic science.

From snail mucin to retinal: why K-beauty trends move so quickly

Korean beauty has become famous for making unfamiliar ingredients approachable.

Past global K-beauty waves included:

  • BB creams
  • Sheet masks
  • Snail mucin
  • Essences
  • Centella
  • Rice skincare
  • Fermented ingredients
  • Lightweight chemical sunscreens

More recent trends have moved toward barrier-first skincare, retinal, peptides, PDRN, fermented and postbiotic products, and “slow ageing” rather than simply aggressive anti-ageing.

PDRN is an especially good example of where enthusiasm should be balanced with evidence.

It originated in regenerative medical applications and has become extremely popular in Korean topical skincare. But evidence for injectable or medical PDRN should not automatically be transferred to a cosmetic serum or cream. Penetration, molecular size, concentration and formulation matter.

How K-beauty became global

Science alone did not globalise Korean skincare.

K-beauty's growth sits within the wider international rise of Korean culture, alongside Korean music, television, fashion and food.

Digital communities then made skincare unusually easy to demonstrate textures, routines, before-and-after experiences and ingredient explanations all translate well to video and social media.

Research has shown that K-beauty influencers can significantly affect consumer acceptance of unfamiliar products, helping accelerate new-product adoption across borders.[8]

But globalisation has also changed Korean skincare itself.

Brands now formulate for customers in different climates, skin types and regulatory systems. Concepts born in Korea are copied internationally, while Korean laboratories integrate ingredients and technologies developed around the world.

K-beauty is therefore no longer simply “traditional Korean skincare exported overseas.”

It is increasingly a global innovation system with Korean roots.

So, is Korean skincare scientifically better?

Not automatically.

Country of origin does not determine whether a skincare product is effective.

What Korean skincare does particularly well is combine:

  • A rich ingredient tradition
  • A highly competitive cosmetic manufacturing ecosystem
  • Fast formulation and product innovation
  • Consumer-friendly textures
  • Strong emphasis on hydration and daily care
  • Increasing integration of biomedical and cosmetic research

The most useful question is therefore not:

“Is Korean skincare better?”

It is:

“Does this particular formulation contain ingredients, concentrations and delivery systems appropriate for my skin and my concern?”
